Festes Majors (Major Festivity)

In the Catalan Countries we have many centenarians traditions. One is the Festa Major (Major Festivity), which is the most important festival in each city, town or neighborhood and usually last three days. Anciently, Major Festivities were held in commemoration of some symbolic date for the city or town, even though they can also be "patronals", ie, in honor of a saint or patron. Often, when not being celebrated in summer, there is a second annual festival at this season of the year.

The Major Festivities are the meeting point of the local community which meets annually in some common scenarios. Currently, often coincide with the fairs. It is normal that the town or village organize free activities and free concerts during the festivals and parades, "correfocs", giants and "capgrossos" and the popular "shacks", that are places that the townhall hire to the different entities of the town or city and where sandwiches and drinks are sold at popular prices.
